The Realtor position in my business networking group (BNI – Loudoun Business Connection) is now open. So, today our group had a Realtor focus day instead of the usual keynote speaker. So, there are a lot of Realtors visiting our chapter until we pick one to fill the spot (which probably won’t be until the end of January at the earliest). Might be a good time for those of you looking to meet Realtors to come visit!

Next week’s keynote presenter will be Craig Wells from Mainstreet Landscaping. We meet every Wednesday from 11:30am-1:30pm at River Creek Country Club in Leesburg. Let me know if you’d like to come check it out!

On Saturday night, I photographed a totally fun Christmas party for the Wasser Family. This was the 25th year in a row that they have done a Christmas party to celebrate with their friends. So, this one was special for them. They set up a fun background with stringed lights behind white fabric with some silver trees and champagne for photographing couples as they arrived. Later during the party I printed the portraits and put them into cardboard ornament frames for the Wassers to give their guests as gifts. Unfortunately, I didn’t think of it at the time, but I should have photographed the printed images in their frames once they were complete so I could show you how smashing they were. The prints were a big hit. There was also some great food, a live singer, and some super cute elves to greet guests and take their coats. A great time was had by all!

This past weekend I photographed a client appreciation party for Wicker Homes. It was a great time! There was delicious food, wine, and GG’s Frozen Treats. Their party was a “Party with a Purpose” which included a silent auction and raffle to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network. I donated a family portrait session as part of the silent auction which received bids. So, I am happy that I can use my photography to help the cause. There was also some other fun activities including shuffleboard, billiards, and darts.

UPDATE: $3,125 was raised for Children’s Miracle Network! I’m proud to know such generous people!

About a month ago, I did a commercial portrait shoot of Tad and Debbie Wicker in preparation for their new marketing campaign including their new website. This was a fun birthday party for Ashley! The party was at a hotel due to the rain. Originally, it was planned for Algonkian Park, but we had major thunderstorms and tornadoes rolling through. I don’t think the weather bothered anybody one bit, though. In addition to the traditional birthday festivities, the girls had their make up done, dads made cotton candy, and the girls enjoyed swimming at the hotel pool. I even did a selective color group shot of the girls with their cotton candy.

For our first family vacation, we stayed at the Villa Roma Resort near Calicoon, New York in the Catskills. It was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. There were some small towns nearby which were sort of interesting. I couldn’t imagine living in a small town at all. We had pizza from one of the small town restaurants which was pretty good. We also walked around and explored. It rained a lot the first few days we were there and since we were near some major waterways there was a bit of flooding in the area. We were disappointed to drive out to this place called Sonoma Falls Farm only to find that it was closed indefinitely.

We visited two parks both with unique bridges. The first was Stone Arch Bridge Historical Park which featured a 3-arch stone bridge which was built in 1880. There was grass growing on top of it. The river that ran beneath the bridge was overflowing its banks from all the rain. I did get some nice HDR photos of the bridge.

The second park was Livingston Manor Covered Bridge Park. I’ve never seen a covered bridge in person. Apparently, the founder of the YMCA lived in the house next to the bridge. So, that was sort of interesting. Alex enjoyed running around in the grass that was there and playing with the rocks.

We also spent some time swimming at the indoor pool, playing at the playground, enjoying the game/play room, and eating at the dining hall at the resort. I tried Cornish hen for the first time which was pretty tasty. Unfortunately, the outdoor pool and water park at the resort wasn’t open yet for the season, which we didn’t know when we planned the trip, but it was too cold to be swimming outside anyhow.

So, I thought I’d try the technique described here to create an “invisible black background” with Nikki the “supermodel.” First we tried shooting inside, but the flash was lighting up the furniture and wall behind her. So, then we moved outside in a shady area in my backyard. I think it would have been better to try this in the evening rather than in the middle of the afternoon because in order to get the background completely black I needed to close the aperture down so far that not enough light from my flash was getting to my camera to light her up. And when I opened the aperture up more the bright spots coming through the trees were showing up in my background. So, most of my photos ended up with a very dark background, but not completely black. It took some trial and error to even get everything close to right, but I did end up with one image that I really liked after a little bit of editing (mostly of the background, not Nikki).

Tonight My BNI group will be having a mixer at Main Street Landscape in Haymarket from 5-7pm. It should be a fun time and a good way to meet some new people in the area. Thanks to Craig for organizing the event! If you’d like to come as my guest, let me know.

This week I did an interesting shoot for a criminal lawyer named Lawrence. He wanted posed scenarios with a model to market his law firm. He was trying to go for a cheesy, sexy kind of thing. I’m not sure if I captured that or not, but it was a fun shoot. Here are a few shots that I thought were interesting…
